Volunteers make a significant impact on the excellent education our scholars receive, and we enjoy having parents and community members actively involved at the school. There are numerous ways to serve! Volunteers come in each week to read aloud to classes, tutor students, walk to recess and the library, help with administrative tasks, and assist with special events.

Volunteer Application and Background Check

All volunteers must create a profile within Crossroads volunteer portal. Once the profile is created, be sure to complete registration with Missouri Family Care Safety Registry. In an effort to ensure the safety of all Crossroad Charter School,  students, and staff all volunteers ages 18 and older, working directly with scholars in a chaperone or one-on-one role must complete a background screening through the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry Background Screening System yearly prior to working with CCS scholars.

Prospective volunteers must register on the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry ( Instructions on how to register can be found here https://health.mo.gov/safety/fcsr/pdf/registrationinstructions.pdf). Once prospective volunteers are registered, they should contact the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry at (866) 422-6872 to request a background screening on themselves. FCSR will complete the screening, then send the prospective volunteers a copy of the screening letter via email &/or mail. Once received, a  copy of the screening letter  should be sent to Crossroads Charter School Community Engagement Manager, Morgan Butler. For questions or assistance with the background screening please contact Morgan at [email protected], 816-221-3191 ext. 331.

Volunteer Agreement

By serving as a volunteer you agree to follow the volunteer terms, conditions and policies listed in the CCS Volunteer Agreement (which can be accessed in the volunteer portal once your account has been created.) All volunteers must check-in at the front desk with a staff member, sign-in using the volunteer binder and receive a volunteer badge or sticker. After completion of your volunteer task, volunteers should check out at the front desk, sign out and return the volunteer badge.

Volunteer Portal

All school documented parents/guardians will be able to create their own profile and password. It is strongly encouraged that all volunteers watch use the tour guide instructions upon initial profile creation on the website to familiarize themselves with the portal. Volunteers have the ability to sign up for activities based on their listed preferences.

Only volunteers with completed and cleared background screenings will have a “Completed Background Check” preference permitting the ability to view and sign up for a chaperone or one-on-one task. On the portal, volunteers will be assigned a group based on your relationship to the school i.e. community volunteer, Central Street parent, etc. Volunteers will have access to tasks for their assigned group. All volunteers must sign up for a volunteer task through the CCS volunteer portal. Link to Volunteer Portal

Volunteer Portal FAQs

Why do we have to use the portal for volunteer sign-ups?
We want to recognize and keep track of volunteers and the work they do to support CCS; maintaining a volunteer portal helps us keep track of volunteer contact info, assignments and hours in one place for all CCS volunteers. We also want to be accountable for who our volunteers are and what they are doing to ensure the safety of your scholars and staff.

Why do I have to complete a background screening?
To ensure the safety of our scholars, staff and families background checks must be completed to vet prospective volunteers working with scholars. In an effort to be efficient we ask that prospective volunteers request their own background screenings and turn them into the Community Engagement Manager for clearance.

I don't know how to use the portal, what do I do?
Contact CCS Community Engagement Manager, Morgan Butler ([email protected], 816-221-3191 ext. 331) for assistance, task entry or training on the volunteer portal.

Can we use signup genius for volunteer tasks?
We ask that all volunteer sign-ups be completed through the portal. This will help minimize confusion on volunteer sign-ups and keep volunteer processes clear for staff and families.

I am volunteering for a task at the school that does not involve working with scholars, do I need a background check?
No, only volunteers working in a chaperone role or working one-on-one with students require a background check (field trip chaperone, reading helper, room parent, etc.). All opportunities that do not require background checks will be located on the first page of the volunteer section within the Membership Toolkit website.

I am a board member or community partner, do I use the portal?
No, on-going community partners and board members utilize a separate background and signup process.

We have a PAC event that needs volunteers, what should we do?
Email a request to the Community Engagement Manager to add the PAC volunteer tasks to the portal. Requests must be received 10 days prior to the volunteer task date to ensure the task is posted on the portal; we can not guarantee that forms completed in less than 10 days will be added to the portal. Volunteers may sign up for PAC volunteer opportunities through the volunteer portal.
